Parenting tips for teaching kids problem-solving skills at home!

 

The key to problem solving for your child is to demonstrate the process of problem solving so that he can begin to anticipate and solve his own problems. Problem-solving skills are essential life skills that children can learn at home. As a parent, you have a vital role in teaching your child how to identify and solve problems. These skills will help them throughout their lives, both academically and professionally. We hope the tips we’ve provided will help you get started on this vital task. This kind of knowledge is necessary in order for children to develop healthy relationships with others. 

1.  Creating a Problem Scenarios

 Using pictures and stories to talk about problems and the different solutions children can use is a great way to practice problem solving. Parents can make use of scenario cards to tell a story.  Here the child and the parent both look at the picture and talk about it by describing what is happening. for example the picture may contain content of a girl that is using bad words. As a parent you can then ask the child to come up with possible solution and how it may affect their action.

 2.  Ask for Advice from the children
Ask your children for advice when you have a problem. This teaches them that it’s common to make mistakes and face challenges. It also gives them the opportunity to practice problem-solving skills at the same time think critically.

3. Ask children questions that are open - ended.

Open - ended questions helps to broaden children's thinking processes, to develop their speech and language skills, and to build confidence in their ability to express themselves using words. A child's ability to think critically and creatively helps them become better at problem solving.

4. Encourage children to join problem solving groups.

 Have them join a group or club that helps them improve their skills in a variety of setting. this is from science and environmental to debating and international affairs. Example debate groups and other social groups.

5.  Seek professional help.

 If you are concerned about your child’s problem-solving skills or if they are experiencing difficulty in other areas, consider seeking professional help. A therapist can assess your child’s skills and guide how to improve them. As a parent, you can also consult the child's school teacher on advise on how you can assist the child become better at problem solving.

6.  Reward success for solving a problem

 When your child solves a problem effectively, reward them by praising and encouraging them. Let them know that you are proud of them for what they have accomplished. This will motivate them to continue practicing on their problem-solving skills.
